Have you recently stepped into a new executive or sourcing role at your company? Perhaps you are heading to Nanjing for the very first time—conducting a critical quarterly quality audit, preparing for a high-stakes new product launch with your long-term manufacturing partner, or traveling solo to evaluate potential new Tier-1 suppliers.
In China’s business culture, established Chinese partners and host factories will almost always offer to pick you up at the local train station or airport. The real executive challenge is: How do you get to Nanjing from your international gateway without travel blunders? Below is the battle-tested roadmap for overseas managers.
Route 1: If You Fly Internationally into Shanghai (PVG)
Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) is the most common international landing hub. From Shanghai to Nanjing, you have two primary options:
🚄 Option A (Recommended): Bullet Train via Shanghai Hongqiao
Step 1: PVG Airport to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station (~1.5 hours)
Shanghai highway traffic can be unpredictable and heavily congested during peak hours. If you don’t mind public transit, taking the express Metro Line 2 / Airport Direct Line from PVG directly to Hongqiao Railway Station is punctual and stress-free. If you take a taxi or hired ride, buffer at least 1.5–2 hours.
Step 2: Bullet Train to Nanjing South (1 hour)
Board a high-speed G-train at Hongqiao Station. In just ~60 minutes, you arrive at Nanjing South Railway Station (南京南站), where your Chinese business partner or factory driver can meet you right outside the arrival gate.
🚗 Option B: Direct Private Chauffeur from PVG (~4 hours)
If you are carrying heavy sample cases or prefer a zero-transfer journey, you can hire a private executive car directly from Shanghai Pudong Airport to your Nanjing hotel (approx. 4 hours drive).
💡 Insider Tip: For high-value strategic procurement or long-standing relationships, Chinese manufacturing partners frequently dispatch a company car to Shanghai to greet VIP clients directly. It is completely customary to ask your supplier if they provide Shanghai airport pickup!
Route 2: If You Fly Internationally into Guangzhou (CAN)
If your flight lands at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN):
- Do NOT Take the Train: The high-speed rail from Guangzhou to Nanjing takes nearly 9 hours—it is not practical for busy executives.
- Book a Domestic Connecting Flight (2 hours): Fly directly from Guangzhou (CAN) to Nanjing Lukou International Airport (NKG). The flight takes approximately 2 hours.
- Airport Pickup: Once your domestic flight lands at NKG, simply notify your partner to meet you at the terminal arrivals exit.
Route 3: Connecting from Beijing or Other Manufacturing Towns
If your business itinerary involves multi-city supplier audits (e.g. visiting suppliers in Beijing, Shandong, Zhejiang, or Jiangsu beforehand):
- Beijing to Nanjing: Take the high-speed Fuxing bullet train from Beijing South to Nanjing South (approx. 3.5 to 4 hours) or take a 2-hour domestic flight.
- Regional Industrial Hubs: China’s high-speed rail network connects almost every small county and industrial cluster. Traveling to Nanjing from surrounding manufacturing cities is exceptionally fast and frequent.
Many Chinese city and station names look remarkably similar in Latin Pinyin (e.g., Nanjing South vs. Nanchang vs. Nantong vs. Nanjing Station), but they are hundreds of miles apart!
We once assisted an overseas client who mistakenly booked a train to a similarly named regional station and ended up losing 6 hours detouring back. Always send your train ticket screenshot or station name to your Chinese partner or Yuki & Daniel to verify before boarding!
